Supermarkets and GE Foods

Supermarket activism was extremely important and effective in forcing genetically engineered (GE) food off the shelves throughout Europe. In the U.S., we are starting to see some of those same results. Whole Foods and Wild Oats, two national supermarket chains, pledged to use only non-GE ingredients in their store brand products after consumers expressed their concerns about the use of these experimental foods. Trader Joe’s, after more than a year of being the target of a consumer campaign by several grassroots groups, NGO’s, and individual activists, pledged to source non-GE for all their store brand products. Now even giant national chains like Albertson’s and Safeway have organic store brands to appeal to consumers who want to avoid GE foods. HEB, a Texas supermarket, even labels its new product line as Non-GMO after they were the focus of a long and ongoing campaign from local customers and grassroots groups.

Now we have the opportunity and the obligation to demand safe, healthy, non-GE foods from all of our supermarkets across the country. The victory at Trader Joe’s proves that supermarkets can make this change. Perhaps more importantly, this victory shows that, working together, we can make this change happen!

Supermarkets are strategically important for market intervention because:

*    Supermarkets control a large amount of food production through their store brand products. In the U.S. store brands typically account for 25 – 40% of supermarket sales. Store brands are also the supermarkets’ way of gaining customer loyalty.
*    Supermarkets are the part of the food industry that has the most exposure and immediate accountability to the public. They also have the least to gain from GE foods.
*    Supermarkets must answer to their customers and the public, and they must maintain a good public profile and trust. The supermarket industry is highly competitive and the profit margins are relatively slim, so any threat of losing customers, sales or image is a serious one.

Supermarkets are great places to engage people:

*    Most people do the majority of their shopping on the weekends when they have a little more time. This allows you the time to talk with them about GE food.
*    People are already thinking about food and making decisions about their purchases so what you say has immediate relevance.
*    You are at the magical “point of sale”. Food companies and advertisers pay a lot of money to be where you are – use it wisely.
*    Supermarkets are public, high-volume, mainstream and accessible – even better than a street!

Why Supermarket Campaigns are Effective:

*    Supermarkets watch their bottom line and the movement of their sales very closely. Again, this is a highly competitive industry with narrow profit margins – every dent will be felt
*    Supermarkets protect their brand – they can not afford to lose trust. If their store brands are thought of as lower in quality, so too will be their store.
*    Supermarket managers pride themselves on responding to the needs of their immediate community of customers. Most store managers also receive bonuses based on their store sales. This is a great opportunity.
*    Supermarkets strive to be seen as the consumers’ friend and they want to build up a relationship with their customers (hence loyalty cards, special points, store coupons on receipts, etc)
*    Supermarkets watch their competitors closely. If one moves on an issue and does well, they will follow suit.

  1. Great site…aside from the fact that 50% of it is “unavailable” or “does not exist”.
    Keep up the great work!

  2. Sorry about that! Some of the “preview” boxes were not working correctly, and some of the links were bad as well. I think I have fixed them all. Please let us know if you find any more! Thanks for taking the time to let us know.

  3. What do you do when the only grocery store in your town won’t stock a suffcient amount of food, much less anything healthy? We have one store in our town, Terrible produce selection non GE or otherwise and when you complain, they tell you to email corporate, you email corporate, but nothing changes.

I am so fed up with the grocery industry. How do you on a tight budget manage organic meat or produce when it is almost 3-4 times the cost of the GE poopoo they sell us?

How do we mandate an affordable “CERTIFIED” organic HEALTHY produce, meat, dairy? Our children are going thru puberty at an alarmingly early age….. when they have not yet mastered the social skills necessary to deal with the emotional mood swings hormones play during that time. 9 & 10 year olds should not have to be dealing with this until they are 12 or 13 or older..

If I have one piece of advice to parents, you eat the crap if your budge doesn’t allow all organic, feed the good stuff to your kids! Hormone Free MEAT!

Stop holding the Citizens of the USA hostage to unhealthy food! Look at those that aren’t as fortunate as you or I, how can they possibly make healthy choices when Frozen pizza is a $1.25 and a healthy alternative is $8-$12?

How do we as a country DEMAND better food choices and get the greedy corporate pigs to care just a little about the health of the product they sell and make their money from?

Definately frustrated, I say Class Action Civil suit to force change, not gain money, FORCE healthy food!

Thank you for letting me rant.

  4. Amen…Sister Cindy!!! What good is winning the war on terrorism when we cannot keep our own country safe from agricultural / scientific bullies like Monsanto.

Does it take the length of a full generation to establish the fact that hormones and chemicals in our food directly affect the population’s health? I would venture to say, if parents with school aged children were made to eat what is being offered in public schools, there would be a major rebellion!!!

I for one, would like to see more of my tax dollars going to feed and teach the young and school aged children healthy choices. It may be too late for us, but do we not owe the next generation a healthy, fighting chance?
