Senator Barbara Boxer (CA) and Representative Peter DeFazio (OR) circulate Congressional letter in support of CFS’s legal petition to FDA demanding labeling of GE foods.

In the U.S., we pride ourselves on having choices and making informed decisions. Under current FDA regulations, we don’t have that choice when it comes to GE ingredients in the foods we purchase and feed our families.  This led the Center for Food Safety to submit a legal petition to the FDA demanding that the agency require the labeling of GE foods.

In response, Senator Barbara Boxer (CA) and Representative Peter DeFazio (OR) have authored a bicameral Congressional letter in support of our legal petition and will be urging their fellow Members on Capitol Hill to sign onto their letter.

Please email your U.S. Senators and Representative and urge them to join the Boxer-DeFazio letter in support of labeling!

Consumer Groups Petition FDA to Ban GE Salmon as an Unsafe Food Additive

Groups say fish couldn’t pass proper review

Today consumer groups Food & Water Watch, Consumers Union, and the Center for Food Safety submitted a formal petition asking the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to classify and evaluate AquaBounty’s “AquAdvantage” genetically engineered (GE) salmon and all of its components as a food additive. The groups’ legal petition contends that the current agency review process that treats GE salmon only as a new animal drug is insufficient to protect public health, and that the agency is required by law to review the GE salmon under what should be a more rigorous process for any novel substance added to food.

“The data FDA has on GE salmon, which were supplied by Aquabounty, are incomplete, biased, and cannot be relied upon to show that the GE salmon is safe to consume,” said Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter. “Aquabounty’s own study showed that GE salmon may contain increased levels of IGF-1, a hormone that helps accelerate the growth of the transgenic fish and is linked to breast, colon, prostate, and lung cancer.”

Center for Food Safety Calls On EPA Not To Backpedal On Its Agreement To Track U.S. Animal Factories

Much Needed Inventory Would Identify Animal Factories’ Locations and Manure Management Practices, Allowing EPA To Begin Assessing Scope of National Threat To Water and Food Supplies

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) submitted comments strongly criticizing the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) disappointing failure to implement a 2010 settlement agreement it reached with environmental groups and called on the agency not to capitulate to industry pressure and weaken its much needed action. CFS’s comments were also joined by Friends of the Earth.

In 2010, EPA agreed to conduct an inventory and profile the largest animal factories by requiring reporting of very basic operational information such as geographic location, ownership, quantity of manure produced, and use of manure.  Despite widespread animal factory farming in the U.S., EPA never previously tracked this data, and thus has no understanding of the scope of the manure problem that is polluting our nation’s waters and placing our food supply at risk.
