In the latest installment of her “Story of Stuff” videos, Annie Leonard walks us through “The Story of Cosmetics,” and the ugly truth of toxics in, toxics out. Visit the website for an annotated script, viewing party materials, fact sheets and more.
As she explains in the Huffington Post, “It turns out the average American bathroom is a minefield of toxic chemicals. Sunscreens, lipstick, moisturizer, shaving cream — many cosmetics and personal care products for babies, kids, moms and dads contain chemicals linked to cancer or other health problems like learning disabilities, asthma and even damaged sperm.”
In response to growing awareness and concern over these toxic ingredients in personal care products, Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) are introducing the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010, which would phase out the most dangerous chemicals, set up a system to assess cosmetic ingredients for safety, require companies to be transparent about what’s in their products, and provide adequate resources for the FDA to do its job. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has a page set up where you can urge your Representative and Senators to support it here.

I want to know which sunscreens and lipsticks have dangerous chemicals.
I think a quicker way is to not buy the products. You can research the web for free to learn what not to buy …mostly everything advertised on TV and that is on the shelves now. Vote with your wallet — the less revenue companies have, the less politicians can be bought. Then vote out the bought reps in Congress. Actions speal louder than words.
