Help Us Fight Monsanto in the Supreme Court: A Message from Andrew Kimbrell

Help us reach our goal of $100,000 during our special Fall Fund Drive!

Over the past few years, the Center for Food Safety (CFS) has used groundbreaking legal victories and grassroots campaigns to protect your food by putting a halt on the sale and plantings of many GMO crops.  With the support of individuals such as you, we’ve successfully stopped the commercialization of genetically engineered wheat, rice, alfalfa, and biopharm crops (crops that have been engineered to produce pharmaceuticals). And we’re on our way to stopping other crops – such as a recent federal court victory that called the government’s approval of Monsanto’s pesticide promoting GMO sugar beets “illegal.” And for years we’ve helped fend off the approval of genetically engineered salmon.

Imagine if these GMO crops had not been stopped. Think of all the foods using wheat, for example that would have been contaminated had Roundup Ready wheat been commercialized. Or the threat to organic dairy if alfalfa was contaminated by Monsanto’s genetically engineered variety. We know that nearly 400 million pounds of additional herbicides have been used because of the use of GMO crops designed to withstand massive doses of toxic weed killing chemicals. Imagine the pesticide pollution of our croplands, waterways, wildlife and air that would have occurred if GMO wheat, rice and alfalfa had been commercialized. And independent scientists have shown that the release of even a few genetically engineered salmon into a native population could lead to extinction.

CFS needs your support so we can continue our legal and grassroots work to protect the food supply and hold the government and biotechnology companies such as Monsanto accountable for their actions.

The biotechnology companies and their allies in government are fighting back–hard. For example, CFS’s successful GMO alfalfa case—which for the first time in history halted the planting of a new genetically engineered crop—was a major setback for Monsanto. As anticipated, Monsanto appealed the case, not once but twice. CFS defended its victory and, fortunately, the Courts have denied both of Monsanto’s appeals, upholding a 2-year old nationwide ban on the planting of genetically engineered Roundup Ready alfalfa. However, just last month, Monsanto petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case. Now, CFS faces a new challenge – defending farmers, the environment and our food safety against Monsanto in the highest court in the nation.

CFS needs your help to support our legal work to fight Monsanto’s attempt to appeal the GMO ban in the Supreme Court.

Fighting Monsanto in the Supreme Court is no small challenge. But with CFS’s dedicated legal staff, and the help of the scientific and legal expertise of our colleagues, we are confidant we will prevail.  However, to do all this, we need your financial support.

The good news is that we are halfway to reaching our goal of $100,000. As we’ve said before, our members are our most important asset, and we need your support to help us fight this battle against Monsanto in the courts.  If you appreciate all that you have received from the Center for Food Safety and our True Food Network over the years, please show us with a generous contribution!  Every dollar you donate to CFS will be doubled by a matching grant for our litigation!

Please help us continue our good work to keep our foods and our farms free from GMOs. Together, we can create a new food future for ourselves, our farms, and our families.

  2. Great topic, this is going to help so many people get the whole concept

  3. Thank you so much for fighting the good fight againts this horrible corporation, and keeping our food safe.

  4. I am wondering why you could not turn the tables on a company like this and allow those whose crops are being polluted with unintended GM byproducts to sue for genetic pollution of the environment. Don’t the laws already insist that a company is responsible for containing the products and byproducts of its industry in a way that respects the property and persons of others?

    Food for thought.

  5. Thank you for fighting Monsanto, my blood boils when I here what they are doing. They should be stopped like Microsoft for trying to monopolize the food. I also think the only way to fight them isn’t with money, but people and a cry from the people to the government. Lawyers who care should be providing farmers with free legal advice so they don’t fold due to costs, and organization for farmers should be formed and new farmers should be reached all the time to educate them before it happens to the. Plus resources could be pooled and as it grew in power and money it could defend farmers. They could help subsidize money to convert farmers to non use of Monsanto’s poison. I would be happy to help.
