Composting toilets and gray water systems go a long way in solving some of these issues, yet, if you check most city/county/state codes, they are adamantly against composting toilets.

Why? Because Chlorine is the only thing they ever studied and they aren't about to learn anything new!

Government agencies move very slow, and are strongly against change -

While there ARE all these components- metals, flame retardants, endocrine 'dispuptors', etc- there are also valuable nutrients... and a resolution to an ongoing problem of our social organization. Some of these things break down over time. some may be "neutralized" by being incorporated into chemical compounds that aren't going to leach out. Many of these things are not likely to be taken up by all plants... and/or concentrated in the part of the plant that's ultimately consumed as food.

This is, basically, a case of "I don't want the treated remnants of what goes into my sink/toilet, etc spread in my backyard." OK-Fine. Who's 'backyard' SHOULD it be spread in, then? This isn't uranium mine tailings or coal fly-ash. But it IS the outflow of our present ways of living... and an attempt to be responsible for all that. If "waste streams" need reconfiguring, if flame retardants need banning, if there are ways to remove undesirable trace metals from the wastes that we generate, let's Do those things! This should be an encouragement to take the "recycling ethic" to the next level... until we have a society that has "moved beyond Waste". ^..^
