Thank you for your great question! We have not included strawberries in the pocket Shoppers’ Guide because there are no genetically engineered strawberries on the market. While GE strawberries have been experimented with, they have thankfully not been commercialized, so you will not find them for sale.
Because the guide is small in order to be portable, we have limited the listings to products that contain the four major GE crop ingredients: corn, soy, cottonseed oil, and canola oil.
For more information on GE crop field trails and GE-free fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and grains, check out this page: http://truefoodnow.org/genetically-engineered-foods/ge-crops/. If you scroll down towards the bottom of the page you’ll find a section called “crops in the pipeline” which lists experimental and commercialized varieties.
Aren’t tomatoes now predominantly GE? What about potatoes?
Great question! While the Flavor Saver tomato was the first GE food product introduced, it has not been on the market for nearly ten years. As the only GE food to be labeled as such, the Flavor Saver had marketing problems, and the taste and texture were not received well by consumers. Monsanto’s New Leaf potato has been commercialized (a type of bt Russet potato), major potato buyers like McDonald’s rejected the product due to concerns about customer rejection of their french fries and chips. The New Leaf potato is no longer on the commercial market as far as we can tell.
I have now been getting all of our milk from Oberweis dairy. While I believe it is only available in the US midwest, they do not use rGBH, and do not allow cloned animals. Their products are not labelled organic only because the cows are not given organic feed.
Thank you for your comment. Oberweis has informed us that they are rbgh-free, and completed our recent survey on cloning stating they will not use milk from clones or the offspring of clones. Yay! For folks outside of the midwest looking for rbgh-free dairy products, Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility has a good list, and other information here: http://www.psr.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Oregon_rBGHFactSheetsandDownloads. The list is a bit West Coast heavy (they are in Oregon, after all), but many of the brands are national. If you don’t see your local rbgh-free dairy products on the list, let us know what you purchase so we can improve it!

Down with the Devil Monsanto and the USDA! Give us REAL food and not these foods like the McDonald’s Hamburgers that last 10 years without deteriorating!
I am just floored by the fact that we allow and have not tested these foods . I dont think the FDA is run by the government anymore. There are hormones in everything we eat. Genetically altered foods. I see my 8 year girl and her classmates starting to develop breasts and pubic hair. This is not what nature was programmed to do. TOO MANY HORMONES IN OUR FOOD> I am 40 years old and starting menopause. This is not normal for my family tree. Obesity is a plague on our nation now. Come on seriously. It dosent take a rocket scientist to see that what we put in our bodies as fuel is poisoning us. And our Government is allowing it to happen. Breast cancer now hitting women in their 20’s?? Geez. does it REALLY take a rocket scientist> Its a sad sick road we heading down. Money , money , money

I thought many conventional rice crops were, and wheat is ready to be planted now.
Today’s date is 23 June 2009
This is terrifying what Monsanto and the Bush-Obama Administrations are doing. I’m chemically sensitive and dependent upon organic food, which I’ve ingested for more than 20 years.
At nearly 70, with a total knee and hip replacement, there is no way I can grow my own food. What good is health care reform when there is a potential for this new food to cause more damage to our health. Physicians aren’t given the right to know, alike the rest of us. And, most physicians know zero about pesticide poisoning or what questions to ask…so I’ve learned.
Most conventional processed food are already genetically modified, which includes meat which eat feed lot foods –genetically modified corn and soya.
Organic will become contaminated by micro-organisms, beneficial insects, bees, flies and other pollinators as well as the wind –all of which carries GMO DNA to organic fields.
Already farmers are feeling the pinch as their crops are becoming contaminated, and dairy farmers cannot find enough food for their herds. Hence, Organic Valley is cutting back. Hood milk has also cut out the market for organic dairy. Monsanto no doubt pressuring wholesalers and retailers.
In Europe, New Zealand, Japan people have become involved and taken action, repeatedly. We can do. But, this is a repetitive process.
In Louisiana, Monsanto legislation was passed several years ago that took away our rights to learn how our food is grown. Farmers cannot tell and consumers cannot talk.
Monsanto makes glyphosate (active ingredient) for Roundup in Luling, Louisiana over near New Orleans along the Mississippi River. One may think that our President would come to the aid of the poor black people that live long the river, but he doesn’t seem to act unless their is a groundswell. The grass roots efforts must make this happen!
Save our organic agriculture. Participate in the process.

We, farmers and consumers and our children and their children in the US now have no choice as to what foods we eat, because of silence and hiding of information concerning genetically modified foods, because neither FDA nor DoA have not demanded real testing and research that would regulate these commercial corporations which seek to control life without responsibility. Human health, animal health, insect life, and food of traditional and organic produce (and whatever they want to engineer next) are threatened. This is pollution in the seed and in the soil, the heart of all nature. The energies of nature are already compromised with pollutants laid on exteriorly. At best this is shortsighted and blind. At worst, it is the ultimate in human greed. No, No, No!
Wake up and stop the GM foods flooding into our market, it will effect even you. You want health care than you must stop illness where it starts with GM FOODS, say NO< NO <NO
Our FDA is not working to help us, GM Foods is keeping American unhealthy, if you will vote with your health and not your pocketbooks, we would all be better, including you and your families.
We are the consumers. We have a right to choose whether or not we want to eat genetically modified foods. In order for us to make a well informed decision about our food we need it to be labeled. Corporations should not be allowed to force products on the public that we do not want.

Governments all over the world are spending billions of dollars on climate change. If they just stopped the big chemical companies from making billions, they could save all the taxpayers money. All the chemical runoffs eventually end up in the oceans, destroying all the corals etc, and damaging our echo system along the way. The chemicals end up in our foods, causing all the obesity cancers etc that we now see in our world of today, but didn’t see 50 or 60 years ago.
Stop genetically modified foods before they stop you.
There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that GE foods are not safe. They have high toxic residues, create or alter proteins in the food which can cause severe allergies, lead to antibiotic resistance, and have been linked to 65 serious health risks. They have not lowered the use of herbacides, rather have increased the need for it ,as weeds become resistant. Super weeds are being formed, and animals are dying from eating GM soy, and people are dying near sprayed farms. GE crops are destroying the environment and human health.
Monsanto has way too much power, and it’s time for us to take that power back.
We demand a better food supply than this. Health care reform starts with food that doesn’t cause disease.
Ask yourself, have you poisoned yourself and your children this week? Yes, you have- if you ate or fed them nearly any food that contains soya, corn. And I bet you did.
Hi,
I can’t get to the guide. When i click on the picture I go to the Center for Food Safety. org. My guide is from 2001. I assume you have a newer one, no?
Sorry about that! Some of the “preview” boxes were not working correctly, and some of the links were bad as well. I think I have fixed them all. Please let us know if you find any more! Thanks for taking the time to let us know.
Thanks for your comment, Bunny Snow. GM wheat and Rice have both been approved for commercialization, but neither have been planted commercially in the US due to farmer and citizen rejection. Monsanto’s GM RoundUp Ready wheat is the closest to commercialization, but to date, US and Canadian far,ers are still predominantly opposed to its introduction. The primary GM crops on the market now are corn, soy, canola, and cotton (cottonseed oil is in lots of processed foods). There is a small amount of GE sweet (fresh) corn, yellow crokkneck (summer) squash and radiccio, but these are uncommon. Additionally, about 50% of the papaya grown in Hawaii is GM, so you can look for papaya grown elsewhere, organic papaya, or avoid it altogether.
Sorry it took me so long to respond to this post! I guess it got lost in the shuffle somewhere. Greenpeace Canada used to have a great Shoppers’ Guide, but I don’t see it on their site anymore. The best I found was a list of where to buy organics in Canada: http://www.cog.ca/buyorganic.htm. You may want to contact Greenpeace Canada and see if they still produce the guide, or if they know of anyone else who does. Good luck!
I absolutely despise these people who are messing with genetics! Who do they think they are??? Who do the people who make up the Government think they are giving the go ahead for genetic engineers to carry out these experiments where the rest of us may not want our families to suffer whatever heinous consequence may unfold?
Who gave them the right to tamper with natures’ delicately balanced and perfectly engineered works? Did the Government or any of these scientists ask any of the rest of the members of the human race what we wanted!??? They are self appointed and see them selves as little Gods. They obviously don’t even care about their own children or their Grand children or they would not be f**king around with their childrens’ futures.
They don’t know what the consequences are going to be! But lucky for them, they’ll have died of old age and left the rest of humanity to suffer the consequences.
It’s time we all got very angry!!!!!
Short-sighted experiments have wreaked havoc for years. The USDA appears to be pathetically blind to public good, much less public wishes. Why must we imperil our dwindling forests for a cold-tolerant eucalyptus? Why cold-tolerant eucalyptus in the first place? It’s actually important enough to have more eucalyptus that the tree must be genetically engineered to exist outside its habitat and risk the soil, water and surrounding flora? And it’s such an emergency to have this new source of eucalyptus that the USDA blesses the field trials without study. This is absurd. This experimentation without even an impact study by thed USDA continues the legacy of the last century: citizens are mere victims of corporate greed, the USDA is merely a corporate lacky. Thanks, USDA – nice job again.
